Like many of the earliest clan setts, the Campbell of Argyll, owes its origin to the post rebellion output of Wilson's of Bannockburn, whose monopoly on military supply dictated design. 9. Sempill Clan/Family Tartan Tartan Number: 2420. Earliest known date: 1996 The historic connection between the Forbes and the Sempills is the reason for the similarity of the tartans. Sir Thomas Innes of Learney GCVO Lord Lyon 1945 - 1969 suggested that red should be use in the tartan because that colour was in the Sempill chevron.
