Its design is pattern RRBRGRGRRRBRGRGRRR — the page of every tartan sharing this colour sequence.
Documented in Smith brothers' 1850 'Authenticated Tartans', drawing on George Hunter's pre-1822 Highland survey.
The MacCoul tartan groups 2 setts — the same named design recorded as different cloths (its kilt, Carpet, Child's…, or a transcription apart). The master sett (★) is the exemplar.
