Tartans by type
Every tartan in the dictionary carries a type — the tradition it belongs to. Clan and family tartans also have their own clan tier.
- Clan & Family — 1644 tartans. Tartans belonging to a Scottish clan or family — the worn identity of a kin group.
- Personal — 1653 tartans. Tartans designed for an individual or single family, not a clan — treated here as families.
- District — 935 tartans. Tartans of a place — a region, town or area — rather than a kin group.
- Corporate — 2315 tartans. Tartans owned by a company or brand (e.g. the Burberry check), not a family.
- Fashion — 1987 tartans. Tartans designed for fashion or commercial cloth rather than identity.
- Name — 976 tartans. Tartans tied to a surname without a recognised clan structure.
- Military — 133 tartans. Regimental and military tartans (e.g. the Black Watch).
- Royal — 44 tartans. Tartans of the royal household.
- Commemorative — 238 tartans. Tartans marking an event, anniversary or memorial.
- Other — 1733 tartans. Tartans that do not fall under the other types.
