- 01/01/1988 — Merchiston Castle School (register-of-tartans, record)
Based on the Napier tartan as the school was founded in the 1830s in the original home of Napier of Merchiston, now part of Napier college. The school band for many years used the Napier tartan. The new design whilst retaining the sett of the Napier tartan changes the white to royal blue, the royal blue to navy, and the white line to scarlet to reflect the school colours. - 1988 — Merchiston Castle (School) (tartans-authority, record)
In the mid 1980s the school felt that it needed a more adaptable tartan than the variation on Napier worn by the pipe band. This new one was designed by Douglas Kinloch Anderson. Later Colin Hutcheson advised them on a new pipe band tartan and Cameron Erracht was chosen with line pleating used. Blues lightened to show sett.
