Provenance
Earliest known date: pre 1800 The Glen Affric fragment appears to have been hand spun and hand woven. The piece has a hard surface, loose texture, and the use of combed yarn and a natural background is unlike the products of recent decades. It is similar to samples recovered from burials in peat - late 17th century. The dye used in the red stripe is not madder. The black stripe used iron mordant to a standard recipe. The green contains indigotin.
