- 01/12/1989 — Cleland (register-of-tartans, record)
In 1989 John Clelland Hocknull in Australia made it known that he was the founder of the Clan Cleland Society which wished to have a Cleland Society tartan designed. The tartan is based on the Douglas sett (for whom the Clelands were traditionally foresters) and is woven by D C Dalgliesh of Selkirk. The blue of the official tartan is derived from the blue of the Cleland Coat of Arms. Those with the name Cleland, Clelland, Cleeland, Clealand, Kneland, Kneeland, Niland and some MacClelland are more than welcome to wear this tartan. - 1989, December — Cleland (Name) (tartans-authority, record)
In 1989 John Clelland Hocknull of Casuavina in Australia's Northern Territories made it known that he was the Founder of the Northern Territories Clan Clelland Association Inc. who wanted to have a Clelland tartan designed. It's based on the Douglas and is woven by D C Dalgliesh of Selkirk. Previously recorded Cleland at #2181 bears no relation to this but was said to be in the Hutcheson Collection. Needs investigation. Blue is wrong.
